Jonathan Dickson wanted to kill his three sons because he believed they did not love their dying mother. When John became a widower, he mailed out three strange nursery rhymed letters to each son. Robert Dickering received one by mistake. It was addressed to "Robin Dickson," one of the sons who lived down the street. Bob delivered the letter himself and later, told Thelma about the cryptic letter. Together they believed something sinister was afoot.
On their hunch, they visited the sender's home and soon realized that the sons were gathered there together and indeed being killed one-by-one in a most "childish" manner.
He did succeed in killing off at least two of his sons, before he himself perished at the hands of the Hangman.
